Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
1864 Born Henri-Marie-Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa, the son of Comte Alphonse and Comtesse Adèle at Albi. He is a direct descendant of the medieval counts of Toulouse who ruled large parts of the Languedoc until 1271.
1878 Henri, who suffers from extremely fragile bones, breaks his left thigh.
1879 Breaks his right thigh. These incidents leave him with atrophied legs.
1882 Moves to Paris, accompanied by his mother. Studies under Léon Bonnat and then with Fernand Cormon who specialises in vast biblical canvases.
1884 Sets up his own studio in rue Lepic, Montmartre.
1886 Meets van Gogh at Cormon’s studio.
1888 Eleven of his paintings are exhibited at Les XX in Brussels. Theo van Gogh takes some of his pictures to exhibit at the Boussod, Valadon & Cie Gallery.
1889 At the grand opening of the Moulin Rouge, Lautrec’s At the Fernando Circus is hung prominently in the entrance hall.
1891 Designs his first poster for the Moulin Rouge which revolutionises poster design and brings him instant popular fame.
1892 Commissioned to paint sixteen canvases for the reception room at one of his favourite brothels.
1896 Collaborates with Vuillard and Bonnard on set designs for Alfred Jarry’s play Ubu Roi.
1898 Lautrec’s health begins to deteriorate and his output declines.
1899 Ravaged by alcoholism, his family consign him to a clinic for detoxification. After his discharge he lives with a friend Paul Viaud who chaperones him.
1900 Lautrec’s health deteriorates further with frequent attacks of amnesia.
1901 Leaves Paris for Arcachon where he suffers a stroke. He is taken to his mother’s château in the Gironde, where he dies.
