1881 Born Pablo Ruiz in Málaga, 25 October.
1895 After a period in La Coruña, the family move to Barcelona. Picasso, aged 14, passes the examination to enter the Escuela de Bellas Artes.
1900 Picasso and his friend Casagemas leave for Paris.
1901 While in Madrid, Picasso hears of the suicide of Casagemas in Paris. In May he returns to Paris. He starts to sign his works using his mother’s surname, Picasso.
1902 His work at this time uses a predominantly blue palette.
1904 After returning to Spain, Picasso is back in Paris in April 1904, he rents a studio at Le Bateau-Lavoir. Meets Guillaume Apollinaire. Rose Period begins.
1906 Spends the summer at Gosol, in the Pyrenees with his lover Fernande Olivier.
1907 Inspired by African and Oceanic art he paints Les Demoiselles d’Avignon.
1909 Picasso and Braque develop Cubism.
1912 Picasso produces the first collage, Still Life with Chair-caning.
1915 His current companion Eva Gouel dies.
1916 Meets Jean Cocteau who introduces him to Diaghilev.
1917 Designs the sets for the Ballets Russes production of Parade.
1918 Marries the dancer Olga Koklova.
1925 Picasso shows some works at the first Surrealist group exhibition.
1927 Meets Marie-Thérèse Walter who later becomes his mistress.
1931 Picasso’s marriage to Olga breaks down.
1933 Designs the cover for the first edition of the Surrealist periodical Minotaure.
1935 Marie-Thérèse Walter gives birth to Picasso’s daughter.
1937 In a reaction to the Fascist bombing of the Basque town during the Spanish Civil War, Picasso produces the huge iconic painting Guernica.
1940 Picasso continues to live in Paris during the Nazi occupation.
1944 Joins the Communist Party after the liberation of Paris.
1946 Living with Françoise Gilot. They have two children; she leaves him in 1953.
1950 The Vollard Suite, 100 etchings produced in the 1930s goes on sale.
1958 Buys the Château de Vauvenargues near Aix-en-Provence.
1961 Marries Jacqueline Roque who has been his companion since 1955.
1967 Refuses the offer of induction into the Légion d’honneur.
1973 Dies at Mougins, France.
