1746 Born in Fuendetodos in Aragon.
1771 Goya travels to Rome after studying in Saragossa.
1773 Goya marries Josefa Bayeu, the sister of his colleagues and mentors, Francisco and Ramón Bayeu.
1774 Moves to work under Francisco Bayeu in Madrid.
1780 He is elected to the Real Academia de Belles Artes de S Fernando in Madrid.
1785 Becomes assistant director of painting at the Real Academia.
1786 Goya is appointed Painter to the king.
1792 Travels to Cádiz to stay with a friend and collector, Sebastián Martínez. While there Goya becomes very ill resulting in a total loss of hearing.
1793 Returns to Madrid in a weakened state and profoundly deaf.
1796 Stays in Andalusia as the guest of the Duchess of Alba.
1799 Publishes a series of 80 satirical aquatints known as the Caprichos.
1800 Spends the spring at the palace of Aranjuez, working on the group painting of the family of Carlos IV.
1808 French forces take control of several Spanish fortresses. Further French troops cross the Pyrenees. Carlos IV abdicates. Goya visits Saragossa and records the horrors he sees during the siege of the city in a sketchbook.
1809 Joseph Bonaparte is installed on the Spanish throne.
1810 Begins to work on a series of prints based on his Saragossa sketchbooks entitled the Disasters of War which remain unpublished until 1863.
1812 Goya’s wife dies. He paints portraits of the Earl of Wellington.
1814 The ferociously reactionary Fernando VII is restored to the Spanish throne.
1819 Buys a property in the Madrid suburbs called the Quinta del Sordo.
1820 Starts to decorate the walls of two rooms in his house with the ‘Black Paintings’.
1824 Horrified by a wave of terror unleashed by Fernando, Goya leaves Spain. Visits Paris but settles in Bordeaux.
1828 Dies in Bordeaux.
