1868 Vuillard is born at Cuiseaux, Saône-et-Loire.
1877 The family move to Paris.
1885 After leaving school Vuillard attends the studio of Diogène Maillart in Paris.
1886 Attends the Académie Julian.
1887 Passes the entrance examination for the École des Beaux-Arts.
1889 He is encouraged by his friend Maurice Denis, to join the brotherhood of the Nabis.
1893 Vuillard is a founder member of the Théâtre de l’Oeuvre company designing costumes and programs and painting scenery.
1894 Commissioned by the wealthy Alexandre Natanson to paint decorative panels for his dining room.
1895 Meets Jos and Lucy Hessel. Lucy would later become a close friend and favoured model.
1897 The dealer Ambroise Vollard commissions a series of lithographs from Vuillard on the theme of landscapes and interiors.
1899 Travels to London with his friend Bonnard.
1900 Shows eleven paintings at the first exhibition of the Nabis group.
1901 Travels to Spain with Bonnard.
1903 Travels with Thadée and Misia Natanson to Vienna to visit the 16th Vienna Secession.
1908 Travels to England and on to Scotland with the Hessels.
1913 Accompanies Bonnard to Hamburg.
1914 Vuillard is called up for war service as a railway patrolman.
1917 Serves as a war artist.
1928 Vuillard’s mother (with whom he is still living) dies.
1937 Elected to the Institut de France. Works on murals for the headquarters of the League of Nations in Geneva.
1938 A major retrospective of his work is staged in Paris.
1940 Dies at La Baule near Saint-Nazaire.
