c1460 Born in Oudewater near Gouda in the northern Netherlands.
1484 Gerard David is admitted as a member of the Guild of Painters (the Guild of St Luke) in Bruges.
1488 He is appointed as a juror of the painters’ guild. Commissioned to produce a large diptych (probably the Judgment of Cambyses) for the town hall of Bruges.
1494 Moves to a house in St Jorisstraat near to that of Memling.
1501 Becomes dean of the Guild of St Luke in Bruges.
1502 The Baptism triptych is commissioned by Jan de Trompes, the Receiver- general of Flanders.
1507 or 8 David becomes a member of the Brotherhood of the Dry Tree – a religious society many of whose members are from the aristocracy.
1509 David donates his painting of Virgo inter Virgines to a Carmelite convent in Bruges.
1515 A ‘Master Gerard of Bruges’ becomes a member of the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp. This was almost certainly Gerard David who may have spent some time in the city but did not move his home from Bruges.
1520 David is briefly imprisoned as a result of a legal dispute with his assistant Ambrosius Benson.
1523 Dies in Bruges.
