Frans Hals

1581–5 Born in Antwerp.

c1591 The Hals family moves to Haarlem where Frans spends most of his life.

1610 Hals enters the Guild of St Luke in Haarlem and also marries his first wife Annetgen.

1615 Hals’ wife dies.

1617 He marries Liesbeth Reyniers.

1631 Hals asks the painter Judith Leyster to be godmother to his daughter.

1633 Receives a commission to paint an Amsterdam militia company which leads to a dispute, Hals refusing to go to Amsterdam to finish the work and the company refusing to travel to Haarlem.

1635 Hals becomes involved in a quarrel with Judith Leyster over the poaching of a pupil. He is also noted as being in arrears with his contributions to the guild.

1644 The Haarlem Guild elect him as a warden.

1652 Furniture and paintings are distrained in order to settle an unpaid baker’s bill.

1661 The Guild waive his contributions because of his age.

1662 He applies for financial help from the city.

1666 Dies in Haarlem.
