1822 After an apprenticeship with a draper Corot’s family agree to help him financially in his chosen course as a painter.
1825 Leaves for an extended stay in Italy.
1827 While living in Rome Corot submits two canvases to the Salon – both are accepted.
1828 Returns to France.
1834 Visits Italy.
1837 The Duc d’Orléans buys one of Corot’s pictures.
1840 The French state purchases a painting for the museum in Metz.
1843 Corot is again in Italy.
1846 Baudelaire writes approvingly of Corot’s work.
1849 Corot is elected to the Salon jury on which he sits frequently, often using his status to help young artists.
1851 Louis-Napoleon (later Napoleon III) buys Morning, Dance of the Nymphs from the Salon.
1852 Meets Charles-François Daubigny.
1854 Visits the Low Countries.
1862 Corot’s pictures are exhibited at the International Exhibition in London. He paints with Courbet in the Saintonge.
1865 Napoleon III buys Souvenir de Marcoussis for his private collection.
1866 Attacks of gout prevent him from traveling as much as in the past.
1871 Remains in Paris during the siege. Gives a large sum of money to the poor of Paris.
1875 Dies in Paris.
