Edgar Degas

1834 Born in Paris, the eldest son of a banker.

1854 Instructed in the studio of Louis Lamothe who had been a pupil of Ingres.

1855 Attends the École des Beaux-Arts.

1856 Begins a lengthy visit to Italy where he stays with members of his extended family in Naples and Florence. He also visits Rome for long periods.

1859 Visits Siena and Pisa accompanied by Gustave Moreau. Then returns to Paris.

1862 Meets Manet while engaged in copying paintings in the Louvre.

1865 Exhibits the Misfortunes of the City of Orléans at the Salon.

1870 Degas enlists in the National Guard during the Franco-Prussian War.

1872 Travels to New Orleans where members of his family are cotton traders.

1874 Degas exhibits ten works at the independent show which later becomes known as the First Impressionist Exhibition.

1876 Shows 24 works at the Second Impressionist Exhibition.

1879 At the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition Degas has 20 paintings on show together with a number of decorated fans.

1881 At the Sixth Impressionist Exhibition his wax sculpture of a Little Dancer aged Fourteen causes uproar with critics who suggest that it ought to be in an anthropology museum rather that an art show.

1886 Increasingly at odds with many of his former Impressionist friends he sends only 10 works to the last group exhibition.

1894 The Dreyfus affair (Degas was fiercely anti-Dreyfusard) leads gradually to the loss of a number of friends.

1912 Enduring failing eyesight and poor health, no works are produced after this date.

1917 Dies in Paris (September).
