1606 Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn is born in July, the son of a miller in Leiden.
1620 He enrolls at Leiden University at the age of 14.
1622 Starts a three year apprenticeship with the painter Jacob Isaacz van Swanenburgh.
1625 He spends about six months in Amsterdam studying with Pieter Lastman. Then returns to Leiden to establish himself as an independent artist .
1628 Rembrandt takes on his first pupil – the 14-year-old Gerrit Dou.
1631 Moves to Amsterdam – lives with the art dealer Hendrick van Uylenburgh.
1634 Marries Saskia van Uylenburgh, Hendrick’s niece.
1639 Now an acclaimed artist, Rembrandt buys the house next door to Hendrick van Uylenburgh for 13,000 guilders.
1641 Rembrandt and Saskia’s son Titus is born.
1642 Rembrandt finishes The Night Watch. Saskia dies of tuberculosis. Geertje Dircz is employed as a nurse for Titus, soon becoming Rembrandt’s mistress.
c1647 A new servant, Hendrickje Stoffels is employed and replaces Geertje as his mistress.
1649 Geertje sues Rembrandt for breach of a promise to marry her.
1650 Rembrandt instigates legal proceedings which end with Geertje being committed to a house of correction in Gouda.
1654 Hendrickje gives birth out of wedlock to a daughter, Cornelia.
1656 Rembrandt declares himself insolvent. An inventory of his belongings and art collection is made.
1658 His collection and house are auctioned.
1660 Employed by a business in the joint names of Hendrickje and Titus.
1663 Hendrickje dies.
1668 Titus marries in February but dies in September leaving a pregnant wife.
1669 Titus’s daughter Titia is born. Rembrandt dies and is buried in a rented grave in the Westerkirk.
