1732 Born in Grasse, Provence, the son of a haberdasher.
1738 The family moves to Paris.
c1749 After spending some time as the pupil of Jean-Siméon Chardin he enters the studio of François Boucher.
1752 Wins the Prix de Rome.
1756 Arrives in Rome.
1758 Meets the French painter Hubert Robert.
1760 Spends the summer at the Villa d’Este as the guest of the Abbé de Saint- Non, Robert’s patron.
1761 Travels with the Abbé de Saint-Non and Robert on a tour of Italy.
1765 Fragonard becomes a member of the Académie Royale. His presentation piece for the Académie, Coresus Sacrifices Himself to Save Callirhoe is a great success when exhibited at the Salon and is purchased for the Crown.
1769 Marries Marie-Anne Gérard.
1770 His fashionable status is confirmed when he is commissioned by Mme du Barry to produce decorations entitled The Progress of Love for her pavilion at Louveciennes.
1773 Tours Italy visiting Rome again.
1774 Visits Naples, continuing to Vienna, Prague and Germany.
1789 Moves back to live in Grasse.
1792 Returns to Paris. He manages to negotiate the French Revolution without imprisonment but his style is deeply out of step with the Neo-Classical vogue which accompanies it.
1794 Jacques-Louis David uses his influence to recommend that Fragonard be appointed a member of the Conservatoire des Arts.
1795 Becomes President of the Conservatoire des Arts with responsibility for the new national museum in the Louvre.
1806 Dies in Paris in obscurity.
