Raoul Dufy

1877 Born in Le Havre

1892 While working for a coffee importer, Dufy takes evening classes with the painter Charles Lhuillier at the Ecole Municipale des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre.

1900 Receives a scholarship to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Moves to Montmartre and works in the studio of Léon Bonnat.

1903 Dufy displays his Impressionist work at the Salon de Indépendents.

1905 After seeing Matisse’s Luxe, calme et volupté, Dufy turns to Fauvism.

1907 Retrospective exhibition of work of Cézanne at the Salon d’Automne inspires Dufy to adopt the more sober style of Cézanne.

1908 Working with his friend Braque at L’Estaque.

1909 Visits Munich and discovers Expressionism.

1910 Makes woodcuts to illustrate book by Apollinaire.

1911 Becomes friends with dressmaker Paul Poiret for whom he designs fabric.

mid-1920s Dufy’s vibrant, joyful paintings help popularize modern art and he attains a wide popularity which continues his whole life.

1937 Dufy completes large mural, La Fée Électricité.

1940 After the German invasion he flees to Nice, then Perpignan. Continues to paint despite growing problems with arthritis.

1950 Creates stage designs for a New York production of Jean Anouilh’s Invitation au château (Ring around the Moon)

1952 Awarded the main prize at the Venice Biennale.

1953 Dies in Forcalquier, Provence.
