1833 Born in Birmingham. His mother dies shortly after his birth.
1853 Begins his studies at Exeter College, Oxford, destined for the church. Meets William Morris.
1855 After a tour of French cathedrals and inspired by Ruskin’s writings, Burne-Jones and Morris decide to follow artistic vocations.
1856 Meets Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Settles in London.
1857 Collaborates with Rossetti and others in decorating the Oxford Union.
1859 Visits Italy.
1860 Marries Georgiana Macdonald.
1861 Burne-Jones is involved in the founding of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. being particularly involved in the design of stained glass windows.
1862 Visits Italy again with Ruskin.
1871 Visits Florence, Pisa, Orvieto, Rome etc.
1873 Again in Italy.
1877 Exhibits eight pictures at the opening exhibition of the Grosvenor Gallery. They are a great critical success.
1878 Gives evidence in support of Ruskin in the case brought by Whistler against Ruskin. Enjoys success exhibiting his work in Paris.
1889 His critical reception in France is such that he is received into the Légion d’honneur
1890 The Briar Rose paintings are exhibited at Agnew's to general acclaim
1894 Created a baronet.
1898 Dies at Fulham.
