1485–90 The date of Titian’s birth in Pieve di Cadore is much disputed by scholars. Arrives in Venice as a child.
1508 According to Vasari, Titian works with Giorgione on exterior frescoes for the headquarters of the German merchants in Venice.
1516 Stays in Ferrara at the ducal castle for a month as the guest of the Duke of Ferrara. Meets Fra Bartolommeo.
1518 The huge, seven-meter tall Assumption of the Virgin is installed in the church of S Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice.
1519 Titian is in Mantua.
1526 Completes another altarpiece for the Frari church in Venice.
1530 First meeting with the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. Titian’s wife dies.
1533 Titian is created Count Palatine of the Golden Spur by Charles V.
1543 Titian is in Bologna where he paints a portrait of Pope Paul III.
1546 Visits Rome and meets Michelangelo. Paints Pope Paul III with his grandsons.
1547 Charles V summons Titian to join him in Augsburg. Paints the equestrian portrait of Charles V at the Battle of Mühlberg. Charles’s sister Queen Mary of Hungary, regent of the Netherlands, commissions large decorative paintings for her château in the Low Countries.
1548 Executes portraits of Ferdinand I, King of Bohemia and Hungary at Innsbruck.
1550 Travels again to Augsburg where he is commissioned by the future Philip II of Spain to paint a series of religious and erotic, classical subjects
(poesie) to be sent at intervals from Venice to Spain.
1560s His famous ‘late’ style is characterized by very loose handling of paint outlining forms which are dissolved by light.
1573 Commences his last masterpiece, the Pietà.
1576 Dies in Venice.
