1880 Born at Chatou near Paris.
1898 Derain abandons his studies as an engineer to enrol at the Académie Carrière.
1899 He is introduced to Matisse.
1900–1 Shares a studio in Chatou with Maurice de Vlaminck.
1901 Much influenced by the exhibition of van Gogh’s work at Bernheim-Jeune in Paris.
1904 Completes three years of national service in the army.
1905 Spends the summer painting in Collioure in the south of France with Matisse. Exhibits with Matisse, Vlaminck and others at the Salon d’Automne. The name ‘Fauves’ comes into use as a group designation for their work. The dealer Ambroise Vollard buys the contents of Derain’s studio.
1906 Develops friendships with Guillaume Apollinaire and Georges Braque.
1907 Moves from Chatou to central Paris. Braque and Derain form a close friendship with Picasso. Sells some work through Picasso’s dealer Daniel- Henry Kahnweiler.
1908 Destroys most of the work in his possession. Concentrates on landscapes, in a style heavily influenced by Cézanne.
1912 Signs an exclusive contract with Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. His style diverges from the avant-garde, reverting to traditional figurative painting.
1913 Three paintings by Derain are shown at the Armory Show in New York.
1914 Derain suffers four years in the army during World War I.
1919 Creates the designs for the ballet Boutique Fantasque staged by Serge Diaghilev.
1928 Moves to a new studio in rue Douanier. Braque’s studio is in the same building. They remain close friends.
1935 Buys a house at Chambourcy.
1943 Creates a series of 400 woodcuts for an edition of Pantagruel by Rabelais.
1954 Dies at Garches near Paris.
